2010 HypoActive Murray to Moyne Ride Report
By Gavin Wright
With the support of Jayco, Abbott Diabetes Care, Medtronic, Sanofi Aventis, the Nut Bloke and a few top home bakers, HypoActive broke all records this year in their annual weekend cycling event, Woody's Murray to Moyne.
The greatest achievement was the huge amount of money raised for Diabetic Camps. Both riders and crew made a brilliant effort and three team members so far have brought in over $1500, with the HypoActive total nearing $10,000 as I write.
Organisation of the ride improves yearly and combined with dedicated riding and support, HypoActive once again chopped time off every leg of the event.
With an early start again this year, HA riders followed the lead vehicle for the first 15km. First out on the road we had Tim, strong on his second M2M; Duncan, a legendary tower of strength from the first two HA M2Ms; veteran long-distance racer Shane (Rover), with venerable guidance for all; and Ben, a giant among diabetic cyclists, in fact a very tall person in any group of people.
The team was split into three groups this year and the rule was that anyone could do extra shifts, but they must still be on the road with their own group. Riders doing an extra hour were to ride up behind the trailer and stay on their bike - where Asha (and Lyndal) would be waiting with meters at the ready (affectionately known as the strip girls). Anything below four or over 16 and the rider was back in the bus.
Duncan was the first to extend his ride, in fact he rode heroically for the first four hours continuously.
Back on the van, bgl testing was tighter than ever. Lyndal was (very pleasantly) on everyone's case. Riders had to test as soon as they were off their bikes, half an hour prior to riding and again ten minutes before taking to the road. Support crew were also badgered for blood and all results have been tabulated and secured for later digestion. Trevor kept a tight ship sailing through the rapid straits of drink and lolly provision for riders before, during and after their shifts.
The second group out consisted of Murray, down from Brisbane, his second M2M after a break of five years; Greg, also his second, after a break of four years; Lynchie, back with a smile as always; and Gavin, dragged down from the hills of SEQld and with a 2010 target of 300km for the ride. It was great to see old faces returning after a break and the group proved to be fast and happy cyclists.
Third group out was Thommo, who so clearly enjoys the event she spreads pleasure among the team; first timer Juliette, who put in the kind of commendable effort that makes the whole team proud; Craig, a valuable recruit from the recent AcT1vate weekend, who, it has to be said, had rather unconventional handlebars; and our great leader, the accomplished and outstanding Monique.
With riders keen to clock up the k's, the HypoActive peloton grew to as many as 8 at a time, all doing their best to follow careful guidance in rotation, formation and overtaking. And the latter proved most useful as the Insulin Injected Engines, although sensibly aware that the event was not a race, overtook team after team after team.
Mick, Matt and the support crew sped like well-lubed running gear when it came to fast changeovers and the new HypoActive trailer was a big success. Well-secured bikes were a breeze to get on and off. Caro, Johnty and Matt drove like demons into the night, but did so with an unceasing professionalism that inspired confidence in all.
One very big difference this year, strangely to the dismay of some, was no sleeping on the frozen Dantean floor of the giant sheep shed in Hamilton. This time round riders flew straight to a tumbledown old hotel, where real beds awaited them. One or two team members were astute enough to realise that the pub was still open and a few HA stalwarts were spotted in front of very small beers in the very small hours.
The ride down to Port Fairy on Sunday morning had good numbers all the way. Some diabetics fought to keep their bgl's above four after the exertion of the previous day, but stops were short and tightly controlled and the team never faltered. HypoActive’s 2010 Murray to Moyne cycling team, led by Thommo and Greg, rode into Port Fairy in tight formation just three hours after leaving Hamilton. Riders' friends and families and Port Fairy locals all cheered the team in and everyone slid off their bikes with a great feeling of elation and achievement.
After long breaks, Murray, Greg and Duncan were in awe of the smoothness of the operation (and were also three of the highest fundraisers). Top fundraising award went to Ben – well done. Gavin reached his target and rode 314km (not the highest number in the team, however). And Monique, quite deservedly, got the biggest round of applause ever.
The usual pub was not serving lunch at this early hour so everyone made a dash for the Port Fairy Surf Club and ordered lavish cooked breakfasts.
The big moment came. Who was to hold the cherished award? Caro announced all the contenders for the 2010 HypoActive Yearly Best Arse In Lycra (HAY BAIL) and everyone sat in fearful expectation. Although there had been a tie for runner-up (Duncan and Juliette) we had a clear winner. The sunlight fragmented across the ocean outside and a beam spread across Rover's cheeks as he stood to a thunder of applause. Not just a great cyclist. Not just a terrific type 1 diabetic. But the man's got a great arse in bike shorts!
This really was a fabulous year on the HypoActive Murray to Moyne, with great efforts and big achievements.
Anyone wanting to set a goal, give themselves the bonus of better health through plenty of activity and exercise, and have an amazing weekend in the most excellent company of dedicated type 1's should give a thought to signing up next year.
You never know, you could be stepping into Rover's shorts.

Ridin the Highway
Life's like a road that you travel on
There's one bike here handlebars all wrong
Sometimes you bend and sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your head to the wind
There's a world outside every team bus door
Where fears won't haunt you anymore
Where the brave are free and spirits soar
Come ride with me to the southern shore
We won't hesitate
Fill up the collection plate
Eat Breakfast with forks? Well ok…….
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
Type 1’s going my way
HypoActive riding strong
Record times as we blast thru towns
Change-overs smooth support all around
Hypo dog detects falls asleep again
This is the road watch out for the lambs
Team boss Monique passing on my right
Try to speed up keep her wheel in sight
Sit me down spring up again
Gotta test my blood
Now I'm a girly man
There's no gear I can't hold
Road so rough this I know
I'll be there when the boys roll in
Chick’s Team yeah we're survivors
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
Type 1’s going my way
HypoActive riding strong
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
Gimme Gimme Gimme Sugar yeah
Type 1’s going my way
HypoActive’s Kung Fu’s strong
I lost some distance between team and I
A misunderstanding once
Gotta drink my Gatorade on the fly

DONATIONS
We are still collecting donations supporting our charity, Diabetes Camps Victoria. Help make a difference in the lives of young people living with type 1 diabetes. The riders on our HypoActive team now know first hand what it feels like to spend quality time with others living with the same condition. Having this opportunity can change a persons outlook towards a condition that can be isolating and mentally challenging (along with everything else). Our online donation page is here:
http://www.everydayhero.com.au/team_hypoactive
The donation page will remain open until June 2010.
