2010 Ride for the Cure - Supporting Sarah Fisher

Event Date:
16 Jan 2010

Sarah Fisher has lived with type one diabetes for a number of years. Once regularly active, she was hit with a mystery illness a few years ago which severely affected her health and changed her life forever.  Despite these setbacks, and as a way to assist in her recovery, she has set an impressive challenge for herself: to complete the 2010 JDRF Ride for the Cure and to raise money for research into type one diabetes.  Here is her story, and how you can support her.

The Ride to Cure Diabetes is an event I intended to do years ago. Back then, I was extremely fit, training around 35-40 hours a week for various sports. I just never got around to it. Then, my health deteriorated to the point where I spent 6 weeks in hospital, with no one having any idea what was wrong. No one had any idea if things would improve either. I was told that I may get better, to a point, but then I would go downhill again.
Fast forward a few years and, whilst things aren’t great, they’re certainly a hell of a lot better than they were. My feet, legs and knees are still stuffed, as is my balance, but I can finally walk (carefully) unaided (most of the time) and have been able to get back on my bike – so long as it’s my mountain bike, the road is flat and reasonably smooth, and it’s not windy or wet!

Sarah spends her free time volunteering for the Melbourne JDRF office, where she sometimes dons a Jelly Baby suit!

I decided I wanted to do the Ride for a couple of reasons. One, as a challenge. I’m hoping that, by the time of the ride, I’ll be able to ride my road bike rather than my mountain bike, be able to ride up hills, and be able to reach and maintain a reasonable speed. Then there’s also the challenge of being able to wear shoes all day – the nerve damage in my feet means that I don’t tolerate shoes of any sort for very long, as well as the potential heat – I don’t have much in the way of thermoregulation (so I’ve been told) so I don’t really tolerate heat very well. Neither do my feet!
Secondly, JDRF means a lot to me. They fund some of the best research in Australia which not only gets us closer to a cure, but has also led to many breakthroughs in the treatment of type 1 diabetes and some of its complications. They also provide a number of essential support services to people living with diabetes and their families. As a volunteer in the Melbourne office, I know how hard they all work to ensure that these services can continue.
I want to help raise as much money as I can, so I’ve roped in my partner, Andrew, and have set our target at $25,000.

We have a few events planned to help us raise this money, including a movie night, trivia night, paintball, 6-a-side soccer matches and sausage sizzles, as well as selling chocolates and Entertainment Books.
Our fundraising pages are up and running.
