AcT1vate - a Dynamic Success!

AcT1vate – Type 1 Exercise Weekend – A  Dynamic Success!

The 12th to14th February saw 50 participants plus speakers get involved in a residential weekend of up-to-the-minute info and top-level training – all designed entirely for type 1 diabetics.

All present heard scientific stuff to set your mind in motion as well as getting expert tips on swimming, cycling, running and personalised core training.
Speakers included members of the Diabetes Australia - Victoria team, each speaking expertly in their own field. Katherine Iscoe, involved in the first ever diabetic sports camps in the US and director of the Perth Diabetes Fits Camps, spoke captivatingly on the physiology of insulin and the tricks it gets up to in your system. Health psychologist Helen Donovan spelled out some really practical, positive ways of getting your exercise regime happening. Olympian runner Tony Benson had the whole group thinking deeply about their core deportment as they trotted up and down. HypoActive rider Gavin Wright enjoyed having his audience ooh and aah to his slides of cycling in the Amazon and Andes.

There was even a session exclusively for partners (there were half a dozen present), where they were given the opportunity to sit and share their feelings of respect, awe even, at the magnificent job their loved ones did of managing their diabetes (well I assume that’s what they did).
The joint HypoActive/DA Vic event was Monique’s brilliant idea and had type 1’s signing up from all over Victoria – in fact, interest in the weekend reached about twice the number of places available, so maybe in the near future there’ll be a chance to – Re-AcT1vate!
