April 2010 HypoActive Newsletter

WORDS FROM HYPOACTIVE RIDER GAVIN WRIGHT

Hi Everyone, it's April and given HypoActive's event performance over the last eight weeks or so, no one involved in this fantastic group should be feeling like a fool. With AcT1vate, the MegaSwim, Run for the Kids and the M2M we've done enormously well.
The biggest, latest news has got to be the completion of yet another Woody's Murray to Moyne 520km 24hr cycle relay. It was this event that shaped and congealed HypoActive as a type 1 diabetic support group at the very beginning and it's heart-warming to know that it continues getting ever stronger as a team event.
This year's M2M was the most successful ever. This event means a great deal to all those who cycle, support, beaver away behind the scenes or just sit back and root for the team. But we all do it to raise money for diabetic camps. We know, probably better than anyone else, how important it is to get young diabetics active and spending time with other type 1's.
So the biggest success has been in breaking all records in our fundrising efforts. The online total now stands at $9,221, which is a fabulous amount to have raised - well done everybody.
This sum is, however, just $779 short of 10K. I wonder if any supporters out there might be tempted to take the heroic step of pushing the numbers up over the big ten grand? That would be very cool indeed. Anyone who helps take that step for HypoActive and young people with type 1 diabetes can even have a go on my bike.
There are reports of HypoActive events now up on the website - links below - as well as an amazing piece of verse. Craig, a 2010 M2M recruit from the AcT1vate weekend, has turned out not just to be an excellent cyclist and a cherished team member, but has penned the words to a song that you can sing along to Life is a Highway. Just follow the links and the techno instructions and you too can be bellowing out the joy of night-riding with type 1 diabetics.
And what a joy that is.
It's awesome.

Our 8th ride in the annual 520km cycle relay endurance event: biggest team ever, biggest support crew line-up, friendliest ride conditions in years, earliest ever arrival into Hamilton and Port Fairy, biggest fundraising tally (and still rising) AND three 5.5s - all equalling a fantastic weekend!

OTHER FANTASTIC STUFF

Neil Bennett 2010: a race Odyssey

Neil was without doubt one of the strongest riders on the 2009 HA M2M. He's also an avid mountain bike rider. For the last two years he's raced the Otway Odyssey, a gruelling 100km marathon trek through the Otway Ranges. Last year he was plagued by low bgl's, but this year he vowed to let nothing get in his way. Read about sinking teeth and jellying quads in Neil's report of this year's amazing experience: www.hypoactive.org/content/2010-race-odyssey

Connected in Motion - hiking in Canada

Chloe Steepe was a very welcome Canadian diabetic when she joined HypoActive for the Murray to Moyne a couple of years back. Never having ridden a road bike before, she did remarkably well and since then she has set up a very successful group of her own called Connected in Motion. Chloe is based in Toronto and organises all sorts of wild activities for type 1's from all over. If you fancy joining her crew for hiking in Alberta's Rockies or along the coastline or in the coastal mountains of British Colombia this winter (their summer) then visit the website and check out details and all the crazy things these Canadian type 1's get up to: www.connectedinmotion.ca/

Adventurers with diabetes

No Limits is a US based organisation run by Dave Nevins for adventuresome diabetics. He's now enlisting type 1's for his third annual sea kayaking expedition in Sitka Sound. Alaska. The trip runs from July 16th-19th, it costs US$700, which includes kayak gear, boat rental, food, guide fee, camping gear and training, and there may be a film crew along to make it even more exciting. The pictures of last year's trip look amazing. Check out Dave's blog and the No Limits Facebook page.
