FEBRUARY 2010 NEWSLETTER

WORDS FROM HYPOACTIVE RIDER GAVIN WRIGHT

Happy mid-February  - that might seem like a funny welcome, but it's just about the busiest time of year for preparation for HypoActive activity. We've got the Swim, the Run and the M2M all coming up and I hope, with all the excitement, even those not participating are doing just a little bit of training.

I'm still reeling from the full-on AcT1vate weekend. The science was dazzling. The exercise provoking. Actually, I think my favourite might have been lying on a cowhide-print bean-bag watching Adventures for the Cure: the Doco. Seeing Adam Driscoll, a long-term type 1, cycling up mountains on his team trip across America - on his fixed wheel bicycle - was really something. Awesome. Fully.

I'm up in sunny Queensland (actually, it's raining at the moment), so I'm not able to join in with the Swim or Run, but I'm looking forward to rejoining the M2M team this year. This means plenty of practising on my bike, which always leaves me feeling on top of the world. I'm fortunate enough to live right by a load of really steep hills, which is perfect for bicycling, but even if you don't and only have time for short trips, a ride on your bike will leave you feeling great and is a brilliant way to improve your health.

And of course cycling is just one of the ways to get out there, get active, get healthy. So I hope you can all get pedalling, paddling or just reach for your pedometer – and enjoy!

OTHER FANTASTIC STUFF GOING ON

Congratulations to James Glasspool - First Elite National Title!

Type one diabetic James Glasspool became National Champion in the Teams Pursuit at the recent Australian Track Cycling Championships in Adelaide.  Combining with the fastest individual pursuiters at the meet in both the elite and U19 categories, James' role was to set the team up with an amazingly fast first kilometre in the 4km event.  A kilometre time trial specialist and Australian representative in the 2009 Junior World Championships, James competed the task by leading the team for an amazing three and a quarter laps.  The remaining three riders were able to smash out the final three kilometres to set a new championship record of 4min00.417sec and were able to defeat defending champions West Australia.
