Happy New Year - yes we can keep saying this for another five days apparently!
The year is starting off in a smashingly way, and it is now time to get on board (if you haven't done so already. If you have done so, thanks for being such a well organised legend!).
Check out the upcoming events and PLEASE sign up now! We need to finalise teams, order uniforms in your size, and essentially support you the best way possible so you can be best prepared and so we can have another year of success and inspiration.
As a cyclist, I must admit I have never really wanted to look at actually participating in other non cycling events, but this year coming back from injury I have signed up for both the MegaSwim and the Run for the Kids. Both events scare me A LOT, but they are making me get out there and train, and to me, this is what it is all about! As someone who spent most of last year being unable to move my shoulder, I still can't believe I have signed up to do a swim! Yes it hurts my back and shoulder, but I am getting fitter and stronger every time I get in the pool and I get a kick out of seeing better blood glucose levels for the rest of the day. I can't wait to join others at the MegaSwim (Feb 26-27) and show off my doggie paddle!
Don't forget too, our first ever weekend especially focussed on type one diabetes and exercise, AcT1vate, on Feb 12-14. We have been overwhelmed with interest and as I type this there are only a couple of spots left! If you have your paperwork sitting at home waiting to be sent in then DO IT NOW! I am so excited to help bring this program to everyone with type one diabetes - and it doesn't matter what level you are, you will certainly get something out of it.
Til next time,
Monique
President

USA Cross Country skier Kris Freeman is considered USA's next big hope for the cross country skiing events at the Vancouver Winter Olympics next month. And he also happens to have type one diabetes. Make sure you cheer on our type one brother - follow him on twitter or check out the tales from his very open and honest blog. Really, it doesn't matter how elite or well prepared you are, you can still mess things up with your diabetes management as Kris will testify. His last few blog posts really bring this home:

1) the riders who took part on the young adults with type one diabetes team, and their type one mentors, on the recent Great Victorian Bike Ride. Well done to HypoActive regular Paul Lynch for inspiring all as a type one mentor. Read about their experiences here:

2) Sarah Fisher, who took part in the JDRF Ride for the Cure last week in South Australia. Sarah and her partner Andrew raised over $8000 for JDRF. Congratulations Sarah on such an awesome effort! Please stay tuned for her ride report which will be up on the HypoActive website shortly.
3) Fabio Calabria, our type one professional cyclist from Canberra who took part in the recent Australian Open Road Cycling Championships in awful and hot conditions just outside of Ballarat. With a huge proportion of the field dropping out, Fabio hung in with some of the best out there to finish 26th and just behind former Australian champions Matthew Lloyd and Michael Rogers.
Happy Australia Day!
Thats all for now.
cheers
