Two groups featuring athletes with type one diabetes win their division of the Race Across America (RAAM) in June 2009. US based cycling team, Team Type 1 (www.teamtype1.org) competed in the eight person category of the race. All eight riders have type one diabetes, including Australia's very own Simon Bennett from Bendigo, Victoria who is spending most of 2009 training with the Team Type 1 development team in Richmond, Virginia (on the US east coast). Team Type 1 blitzed the race and set a new record for riding from one side of the US to the other (thats 4,900km) in 5 days, 9 hours and 5 minutes. Amazing stuff! Congratulations to Simon and the rest of the Team Type 1 RAAM members for such an amazing race.
Not only did we have a team of eight competing in RAAM, the type one diabetes population was further represented in the RAAM lineup with another winning division! Adam Driscoll, who has type one diabetes, and his long time buddy Pat Blair competed in the two person division who raced non stop around the clock to cross the USA. They also won their division by completing the crossing in 7 days, 1 hour and 38 minutes. You can check out Adam and Pat's commitment to raise funds for children with diabetes at http://www.adventuresforthecure.com/blog.php
Although HypoActive have not had a good response to our planned 2009 snow weekend, we do have something to offer those who are still keen to spend some time above the snow line. Diabetes Australia - Victoria will run the very first camp for children living with type one diabetes in the first week of the September school holidays, from the 17th until the 23rd. And they need camp volunteers to help show these kids that diabetes doesn't have to stop them from doing anything! Camp is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children with diabetes. If you have time to join them during the school holidays and get some ski time in, then please contact us (monique@hypoactive.org) or Linda Douglas at Diabetes Australia - Victoria on +61 3 9667 1746, or email: ldouglas@diabetesvic.org.au

For HypoActive to run the events we do requires a huge amount of time and energy from a small band of committed volunteers. If you would like to join us and help ease the load, we would love to have you on board. Our AGM is scheduled to run next month, and nominations are open for all positions. Should you wish to nominate for a position, commit to being part of our committee and help us nut out issues, or simply take part in the AGM process, please email our current hardworking secretary, Meg: meg@hypoactive.org
The annual Walk for the Cure is on again at Albert Park Lake on October 18, and once again HypoActive will be there in our stunning t-shirts and with a smile doing a lap of the Lake! We'd love to have you join us.
Should the weather comply, we have been known to finish the day refreshing our spirits at the nearby Belgium Beer Garden.
Walk to Cure Diabetes is a great day out, full of fun and a great opportunity to socialise with fellow HA-ers, build some high quality exercise karma and raise funds to help JDRF with their ground-breaking diabetes research! We'd love you, along with your family, friends and pets to join us for this Sunday stroll and for lunch afterwards. Please register on the JDRF website and join our team at
http://walk.jdrf.org.au/register.asp?pType=2&pTeam=158&pCorpFamily=1&pState=Victoria&s=1&tUrBp=1 and stay tuned for team updates as the event draws closer. If you need any further details on this fine, fun event, please don't hesitate to contact Laura our activities coordinator at laura@hypoactive.org
Young adults with type 1 diabetes can gain a subsidised place on the Great Victorian Bike Ride (GVBR) this year through Diabetes Camps Victoria (DCV). This year’s route follows the Great Ocean Road, covering 550km in just nine days. The journey is a chance for participants to increase their knowledge of how to manage their diabetes in a physically challenging, fun, supportive environment. DCV organise annual camps for children and young people with type 1 diabetes in Victoria. This is the first time they have organising a camp in conjunction with the Great Victorian Bike Ride.
The GVBR type one camp is for 18-25 year olds. If you would like to take part or require more information, contact Linda Douglas on +61 3 9667 1746 or email: ldouglas@diabetesvic.org.au
