WORDS FROM HYPOACTIVE RIDER GAVIN WRIGHT
Hi Everyone,
Hope everyone is out battling the elements, taking advantage of all the adverse weather conditions in complicated training strategies. Or at least staying reasonably active.
Great feedback from the last newsletter - many thanks. It was quite right for someone to point out to me that MTB is not universally known. It may not be ultra-hip cycling jive-talk, but not everyone knows it means MounTain Bike.
We also had a splendid response to the call for volunteers. All who are involved in HypoActive are delighted to see it progress as an informative website, a series of ever improving events and various worthwhile peripheral activities, but of course there are quite a few people involved in making this happen. They are all volunteers and so the more stuff we get involved in, the more needs doing and extra hands are enormously appreciated.
So many thanks for the two newbies who stepped forward. But what I'm really trying to say is...we still need a Treasurer.
Anyone who's ever been Treasurer for a community group will tell you it's the best job. It's easy, not much work and you get to count all the cash. So if anyone thinks they could put out their finger and feel the financial pulse - please get in touch.
I was thrilled to get an email from someone interested in joining the HypoActive team for the Brisbane to Gold Coast Challenge (more details below). Looks like we might have a far more prominent presence at the head of the ride this year.
We've also had several people enquire about the Munjara MTB (that's MounTain Bike) Weekend. Fantastic response, but please note the probable date at this stage has changed since the last newsletter (see below). We've been given a massively generous discount for this event, but it relies on there being a minimum number of riders, so if you're at all interested then please get in touch and find out more.
Staggering news from out there somewhere in the Pacific: there are rumours of starting up a NZ chapter of HypoActive. Awesome. Great work kiwis. Really awesome.
So for all of you out there cycling, running, swimming or pole-dancing (because HypoActive's Got Talent), keep at it and we'll look forward immensely to seeing you on your next chosen event.
All the best.
Gavin Wright

RUN MELBOURNE WITH HYPOACTIVE
Event date: 18 July 2010
HypoActive is seeking expressions of interest for willing runners and walkers to join in a team for Run Melbourne - a 5km, 10km or half marathon running event. We will be supporting Diabetes Camps Victoria in partnership with Diabetes Australia - Victoria. The Run for the Kids was a big success for HypoActive this year. Type 1's of all abilities joined in and did their respective distances. This event will be another opportunity to raise money for diabetic camps, a cause close to all our hearts. Also, if you sign up for the event you get a free HA T-shirt and running singlet. Of course you can always buy the HA gear, but earning it out on the track will give you a warm feeling of pride every time you open your drawers.
You can read all about the event here: http://www.runmelbourne.com.au/home.php

BRIBANE TO GOLD COAST CHALLENGE
Event date: 10 October 2010
Last year 9 1/2 thousand cyclists did this 100km Sunday morning ride out of Australia's third largest city, through canefields, past theme parks and into the tourist nirvana of the Gold Coast. As part of every entrant's fee goes to DAQ and the Heart Foundation, it's a major diabetic event in Queensland and HypoActive has had a small team at the head of the ride for the last three years. HA has a member in Brisbane (Murray) and on the Gold Coast (Gavin) and both of them can be of some help with logistics if anyone is planning on travelling from elsewhere.

OTHER FANTASTIC STUFF
NEW TYPE 1 EXERCISE WEBSITE: EXT1D
It was great to see Reality Check giving exercise a good plug in their newsletter the other day. but we here at HypoActive thought we could go one further. EXT1D is a comprehensive resource for your training needs as a type 1 diabetic. The website is a pay-membership scheme, but you can get a free sampler, so we thought we'd get someone who really knows their sports socks to give it a go and report back. Check out next month's newsletter for more.
EXT1D is the work of top coach Allan Bolton who has had type 1 for 32 years. He's competed in over 100 alpine, water and road-based events around the world and is a major contributor on exercise to the JDRF book Straight to the Point. Couldn't be better qualified.
