May 2010 HypoActive Newsletter

WORDS FROM HYPOACTIVE RIDER GAVIN WRIGHT

Hi Everyone,

May's a quiet month for HypoActive activity, but there's a new event coming up (Run Melbourne, not new, but new for HypoActive) and a couple of things further off in spring that might need some thought and organisation if you want to take part.
Greg Kaska and Mike Morgan are planning to put together a weekend of MTB fun down in Gippsland in September (see below). Mike has been involved with HypoActive for years and has been a huge help with bikes, trailers and more. Greg was part of the Murray to Moyne team in 2006 and was one of the riders who returned this year after a gap for another go. (The other two were Murray and Duncan after even longer time away.) It's fantastic to see active type 1's inspired by their experience of an event to create something themselves for the involvement and benefit of other diabetics.
Feedback from the Murray to Moyne and other events shows clearly that although they can be challenging, the type 1's involved learn and feel uplifted by what they go through. That's why HypoActive does what it does - to share knowledge and experience physical challenges in an environment of dibetic control. So for those who have participated to want to provide that opportunity for others is an excellent step forward.
There's also the Brisbane to Gold Coast Challenge in October (see below). That's my neck of the woods and a ride that I help to gather a team for. It's DAQ's biggest annual fundraiser and now a regular HypoActive event. I think it's great to be offering the same kind of activity opportunitiy in Queensland as HypoActive has been doing so well and for so long in Victoria. The geographic diversity of HypoActive's events was something that was discussed at the recent Future Plans for HypoActive meeting. If this newsletter makes its way into the mailbox of any type 1's in far-flung places who know of a really cool event that would draw diabetics like pandas to the bamboo forest, then they should get in touch.
Wouldn't it be cool to see Insulin Injected Engine vests and jerseys in all our states and territories? Maybe even all over the world!
This is of course possible without any organised events, as HypoActive gear is now for sale.
I'm told the weather in Victoria has truned 'Arctic', which is excellent for training of course. Training for something, anyway. Funnily enough, it's warm and sunny in Queensland, but I won't harp on about it.

Hope your activity program is running well. Keep those goals in mind.

RUN MELBOURNE WITH HYPOACTIVE

Event date: 18 July 2010
HypoActive is seeking expressions of interest for willing runners and walkers to join in a team for Run Melbourne - a 5km, 10km or half marathon running event.  We will be supporting Diabetes Camps Victoria in partnership with Diabetes Australia - Victoria. The Run for the Kids was a big success for HypoActive this year. Type 1's of all abilities joined in and did their respective distances. This event will be another opportunity to raise money for diabetic camps, a cause close to all our hearts.

BRIBANE TO GOLD COAST CHALLENGE

Event date: 10 October 2010
Last year 9 1/2 thousand cyclists did this 100km Sunday morning ride out of Australia's third largest city, through canefields, past theme parks and into the tourist nirvana of the Gold Coast. As part of every entrant's fee goes to DAQ and the Heart Foundation, it's a major diabetic event in Queensland and HypoActive has had a small team at the head of the ride for the last three years. HA has a member in Brisbane (Murray) and on the Gold Coast (Gavin) and both of them can be of some help with logistics if anyone is planning on travelling from elsewhere.

OTHER FANTASTIC STUFF

PLANNING THE FUTURE

The HypoActive Planning Workshop was held on Monday 26th April. Turnout was good, discussion was intense and prolonged. Purpose and direction were the topics covered most deeply and a version of the meetings notes will be available soon on the website.
With such weighty matters being considered it was pleasing to see that in the list of HypoActive activities pole dancing took third place after running and cycling.
Someone should organise a weekend.

Places are still available on DAV's fundraising challenge that will have you marching up and down the Great Wall of China. If you can raise the right amount of money for diabetic camps then you'll be flying off with a group of people all dedicated to helping young type 1's. It's a 10-day journey and DAV will provide support for your fundraising efforts.
The adventure is planned for the second half of October and you can read all about it here: http://www.diabetesvic.org.au/Default.aspx?tabid=341

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 10-16 MAY

This week is the great celebration of volunteers and volunteerism. More than one in three Australian adults volunteer for something or other and their main reason for doing so is to help others.
HypoActive is a volunter organisation that supports and helps type 1 diabetics. Positions exist for anyone who would like to help with the good work. They don't involve tons of work - just a bit of commitment and a desire to help promote an active lifestyle for type 1 diabetics. What HypoActive needs either now or soon is a treasurer; someone to organise clothes sales and distribution; an event co-ordinator (for Run Melbourne and others); and someone to keep their eye on sources and review latest research on exercise and type 1 diabetes.
You don't need to be based in Melbourne, just accessible online and at events (for the event co-ordinator), Could this be you? It could. Please get in touch if you can spare just a little bit of time
You can check out all about volunteers in Australia here: http://www.volunteeringaustralia.org/html/s02_article/default.asp?nav_top_id=55&nav_cat_id=357
And get in touch to find out more about any of these positions: www.hypoactive.org/contact

TYPE 1 BULLDOG

There's an interesting article about Western Bulldog Sam Reid on the AFL website. Sam is a type 1 diabetic and the article describes his routines for finger-pricking and bgl management during matches. He talks about his experiences being diagnosed and how diabetes has changed him - for the better. The Bulldogs have done much fundraising for diabetic charities in the past.
You can read it here: http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/93808/default.aspx

That's all for now.

Cheers,

Gavin
