Melbourne Marathon - Team HypoActive

Sunday October 9 was host to the Melbourne Marathon Festival, a run love-fest of all sorts of distances.  HypoActive was well represented in all courses offered, and we were very pleased to see our singlets standing out a mile away.   But this pic I think is the best of the lot:

The HypoActive boys, Nick Meeny on left and Nathan Weaver on the right, were in the last kilometre of the full distance marathon event.  Nick, from Melbourne, and Nathan from Sydney had never met.  Nick happened to spot Nathan up ahead, and the two introduced themselves and crossed the finish line together, spurring each other on.  As they crossed the line, Nathan turned to Nick and said, "Not many people finish a marathon, let alone people with diabetes. We just ran a marathon." Bloody brilliant stuff from the two of them!

Nick keeps a blog on his exploits and you can read about his preparation and how it all went here: http://www.runningwithsugars.blogspot.com/

Nathan's perspective of his experience in the Melbourne Marathon.

Thanks again to you and the HypoActive team for organising the experience.  Coming from Sydney for the event I had a great weekend and a great run.  I hope the HypoActive community continues to grow as the support you guys have for each other and fellow diabetics is amazing.  In regard to my run I had an awesome run.  (It was not as good as I had hoped but I was still very happy.)  My goal was to get through the race and not have any major hypos while breaking the 4hr mark.  I managed to get through the race hypo free except for one small hypo at the 27km mark (3.8mmol).  Until that point I had managed to keep to a consistent 5m 25sec pace. Once I had refuelled and got underway again I alternated between 6m pace and walking for 1km until my calves gave way.  The highlight of the day was being run down by Nick who was finishing his first ever Marathon in fine form.  Running across the line together with the HypoActive singlet on was an amazing and uplifting experience.  To finish a marathon is an amazing achievement but to finish a marathon with diabetes is a greater achievement as the preparation and obstacles you have to overcome are greater. I am always proud of this when I cross the line.  I recommend joining HypoActive and the Melbourne Marathon event to any other diabetic who is looking for a challenge.

Thank you and well done again to all the HypoActive team
