HYPOACTIVE 2009 WILSON HTM BRISBANE TO GOLD COAST CHALLENGE

Very early on Sunday 11th October 2009, a team of HypoActive riders gathered in the sponsorship enclosure at the head of 9½ thousand cyclists for the annual 100km ride from city to coast. They were only three in number, but their insulin injected engines (with jerseys to prove it) cut a handsome wedge in the privileged peloton and they soon set off down the Busway like diabetics on fire.  Read more here: www.hypoactive.org/content/hypoactive-2009-wilson-htm-brisbane-gold-coast-challenge

CONNECTED IN MOTION EVENT

WALK FOR THE CURE

Sunday, October 18 saw thousands of people get up bright and early and head down to Albert Park Lake to raise funds for the improtant research being done to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. With pre-walk music provided by the RAAF band, a warm up and stretching routine assisted by giant jelly babies, jumping castles, mini golf, Rotary Sausage Sizzles there was something in the Walk Village for all to enjoy.

Fortunately for everyone there, the forecast morning showers didn't arrive which always makes the 5km trek around the Lake a much more enjoyable Sunday stroll.

Once dressed in this year's latest fashion item - the 09/10 HypoActive Insulin Injected Engine (check out the photo's on the webpage to see just how good these look - particularly when accessorised with a giant green jelly baby!) the team was ready to head off, with our 2 four-legged team members in tow (or should that be towing the team?).

The HypoActive team did an amazing job this year - raising over $2,000 towards this very worthy cause! If you missed out on donating before the walk there is still time to do so - head to http://walk.jdrf.org.au/teamParticipant.asp?teamID=158
 to make a donation.

ROUND THE BAY IN A DAY

Elaine Thomas who after riding with HypoActive in this years M2M, decided to sign up for Round the Bay in a Day which was held on 18 October.  Elaine completed the ride in 7.5 hours and finished with a legendary bsl of 5.5!  Fantastic work Elaine.

MELBOURNE MARATHON

Many of you will know Dan Seller from the Murray to Moyne cycle relay as he's been a part of this event since the first all diabetic team ventured out on the road. However, on October 11, Dan traded his cleats for some runners and set out to finish his first ever full length marathon - which is 42.195Kms for anyone wondering just how far that is!

Despite an enforced early taper to his training due to illness shortly before the event, he managed to make it across the finish line (somewhat worse for wear) in a very impressive time of 4 hours and 22mins.

Shortly after the race Dan was heard to say that the psychological challenge of finishing the last 10kms was one of the most difficult things he has ever done, however as he is now considering entering the Gold Coast Marathon it must have been worth it!

If anyone is interested in starting running, a group of HypoActive members of varying speeds meet at the Botanical Gardens on Sunday mornings for a light jog to build good exercise karma before breakfast on Domain Road. If you would like to join them (yes, you can just come for breakfast) please contact Laura (laura@hypoactive.org)

Katherine has been involved in diabetes research since her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology & Health Sciences at York University, Toronto, Canada. She completed her Master of Science with Dr. Michael Riddell, a leader in the field of sports science & diabetes, where they examined the impact of exercise on blood glucose control in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Her current research, with Dr. Paul Fournier at the University of Western Australia, aims to create clinical guidelines for exercise using continuous glucose monitors.

Katherine lead the exercise physiology team for the first ever diabetes sports camp for adults, created by Dr. Matt Corcoran, in the summer of 2006 and 2007 in the United States called Diabetes Training Camps. Diabetes Training Camps have since expanded significantly and run all across the US.

In 2009 Katherine created a weekend version of Diabetes Training Camps for people living in Perth, WA called Diabetes Fits.  The weekend was a huge success and generated interest from all over Australia.
