On June 13th at 7:30am (Melbourne time), Team Type 1 left San Diego, to compete in the Race Across America - a gruelling cycling marathon from one side of the US to the other, covering 4,897 km.

In addition to doing ride shifts of between 125 and 200 miles (yes, MILES) at a time, each of the eight riders in Team Type 1 is also riding with Type 1 diabetes - and the associated fluctuations in blood sugar levels, insulin adjustments, and need to refuel with carbs during rest shifts before the next stage.

At approximately 10:13pm (Melbourne time), on June 18th 2007, Team Type 1 completed the Race Across America, in a time of 5 days, 15 hours, 43 minutes - the fastest team in RAAM 2007 - winning the corporate division (from RAAM website):

Part of Team Type 1 was HypoActive President - Monique Hanley - the only Australian, or woman, riding for Team Type 1 - which is an inspirational effort for someone who, when diagnosed, asked her doctor if she could continue to play BASKETBALL...

For more information on Monique's ride - including a couple of emails from the road, check out the information on this website. Team Type 1 were also riding to raise money for JDRF - for information on how to make a donation to Team Type 1, click here.

On behalf of HypoActive, I'd like to congratulate Monique, and the rest of Team Type 1, on their inspirational effort - to even finish such an event is an amazing achievement, let alone to win the division, whilst managing Type 1 diabetes, is a truly awe-inspiring feat. Well done!
