NERANG CYLCISTS GET “HYPOACTIVE” FOR BICYCLE CHALLENGE

MEDIA RELEASE

 8 September 2009

NERANG cycling enthusiasts 48 year old Gavin Wright and 39 year old Murray Little from Brisbane will be “HypoActive” when they participate in the Wilson HTM Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge – on Sunday 11 October.

The pair who both suffer from Type 1 diabetes are training for the 100km event and will be representing HypoActive, a type 1 diabetes group formed to provide information and ongoing support to diabetics who are participating in exercise challenges.

HypoActive team member Gavin Wright said he and a couple of his team members were looking forward to their next event on the calendar – the Cycle Challenge.

“Exercise is especially important for diabetics, but it can be complicated and frustrating as it’s difficult to manage glucose levels from the effect of exercising. I joined HypoActive so that I could exercise with confidence and manage my diabetes more effectively,” Gavin said.

“Having lived with diabetes for most of my life I know how crucial it is to participate in regular exercise, such as cycling, at least three times a week to help keep blood sugar levels low.

“I regularly cycle up to Mount Tamborine, around Beechmont and Nerang as I can’t get enough of the gorgeous rainforests. Cycling for me is all about fun and adventure, and I am very passionate about it.

“I would love anyone living with diabetes to consider joining the Cycle Challenge with us. If you’re interested in joining or you want to find out more information about HypoActive, the benefits of exercise and all the events the club runs annually, check out www.hypoactive.org.”

Gavin is a competent cyclist, but is looking forward to enjoying the 100km ride, rather than pushing himself.

“Last year we finished a lot faster than expected in just over four hours as we had a few experienced riders with us; however this year we are just looking to pace ourselves and enjoy the ride,” Gavin said.

“After the cycle challenge, my next journey will be when I attempt to break the world record for cycling at high altitude in November.”

Since the inception of the Cycle Challenge in 2005, more than 19,000 participants have helped raise over $433,000 for Queensland charities.

Proceeds from this year’s event will go to the Heart Foundation and Diabetes Australia Queensland, who work tirelessly to save lives and improve the health of Australians.

Participants can ride it hard or take it easy. With 100km and 60km options, the event offers a challenge for everyone.

Founded and organised by Bicycle Queensland, the event aims to increase awareness and participation in cycling while raising valuable funds for charity.
